SAN (Sonic Arts Network)

Organisation

Sonic Arts Network is an events, education and information resource with members worldwide. They aim to raise awareness and innovate new approaches to sonic art by providing information and opportunity across the UK.

Founded as the Electroacoustic Music Association in 1979 their aesthetic principles are tied to those of a medium with an experimental approach to sound and technology. Developments within and around electroacoustic music have led this organisation to broaden its network and to engage with a plurality of disciplines. SAN remains unique in the diversity of its activities, both at home in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

Their role as a network, providing information and opportunity on UK sonic art to a world-wide community of members, connects individuals and institutions across aesthetic and geographic borders; our work in education has, since the 1980s, remained at the cutting edge of artistic and strategic creativity; and our support for new work through commissions, research and events has encouraged new developments in sonic art and helped pave the way for the current frenzy of activity in sound work.

If you are interested in experimental approaches to sound and the ways in which new technology is transforming the nature and practice of music you might wish to join SAN.

SPNM (Society for the Promotion of New Music)

Organisation

From contemporary, jazz, classical and popular music to that written for film, dance and other creative media, spnm is one of the main advocates of new music in Britain today.

spnm was founded in 1943 and continues to fulfil and build upon the brief that spurred its existence: to promote and advance the education of the public by encouraging the understanding, appreciation and development of music composed by living musicians born or resident in the UK, and of music generally as expressed in any other medium or form.

spnm achieves this through its eclectic annual programme of concerts, events, workshops and collaborations and through its two publications new notes and Beat Magazine. Guest artistic directors add their own special flavour: Steve Martland for 2000/2001 and Nigel Osborne for 2001/2002.

Through its award-winning work with composers of all ages, spnm generates an interest in the new. Work is brought to the public ear through partnership, dialogue and interaction with performers and audiences. Through this process the mystery which has surrounded the composition of new music is dispelled.

There are no boundaries. spnm will continue to develop this forum of inspiration and support for audiences, performers, composers and other creative artists over the next fifty years and beyond.

To keep up to date with the work of spnm or to become a member, visit our website or telephone us on 020 7407 1640 or contact us at the following address:
